Nutrition News: Changes to new food guide

nutrition update

Health Canada’s new food guide is about to undergo a makeover. Recently, Health Canada released a new set of principles it intends to adhere to for their next food guide. Among the changes include a revamp of the colourful rainbow of food groups to include a more plant-based diet with a detailed focus on plant-based proteins like beans, lentils, nuts and tofu. The move is to acknowledge that Canada has a dynamic, heterogeneous food market. Drinking more water and enticing Canadians to cook more and eat together are also part of the changes to come.

The new guidelines are especially good for peanuts and peanut butter. Peanuts are a plant-based protein that offer an array of nutritional benefits – essential vitamins, nutrients and healthy fats. Cooking and eating together are extremely important to leading a healthy lifestyle and encouraging children to adopt a healthy outlook on food and food preparation. For healthy meal inspiration, the Peanut Bureau of Canada offers many recipes that fit within the new healthy eating principles.
