Consumer Research: Canadians are indulging in dangerous amounts of ultra-processed food: study

Peanut butter toast heartResults from a new study by the Heart and Stroke Foundation are in: a diet of ultra-processed food is associated with obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure – all of which are risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

Ultra-processed foods are high in calories, sugars, sodium and saturated fats – those who consume this are 31 per cent more likely to develop obesity; 27 per cent more likely to suffer from diabetes; and 60 per cent more likely to have high blood pressure. This study is the first in Canada to connect the consumption of processed foods with the increased likelihood of chronic diseases.
